The most common arrangement of the nine gems is a circular form, with a ruby, representing the sun in the centre. When the stones are set in an extended linear arrangement, such as in this necklace, polki is still set in the centre, flanked by the other principal gems.

Navratna, the nine planetary gems represent the influence of all the celestial bodies in one form. The jewel was historically believed to function as a cogent medium effecting harmony between humans and the planets that were to control their destiny.
